Italian Universities hosted DIADEME Seminars

In Italy some Universities, or rather some specialized departments, are very active in research on public lighting. The experience of DIADEME project on adaptive lighting was shown to students, researchers and professors in selected Universities by expert engineers Di Napoli and Giansante, from Reverberi Enetec, coordinator partner of the project, to demonstrate the presence on the national territory of advanced solutions, as in the Rome EUR district case. During 2019, informative workshops were proposed – and favourably welcomed – at Bocconi University (3 April) and Polytechnic (3 April) in Milan, University of Genoa (2 May), Rome Tre (4 June), while in October it will be the University of Naples to host Diademe Team.
Technological evolution is making available low-cost sensors and communication systems, on the other side the European Regulation CEN-13201 on Road Lighting Standards, has established the range of applications of adaptive lighting, i.e. controlled variations over time in relation to traffic flow, time, atmospheric and weather conditions.
The CEN-13201 standard opens the field to a real-time adjustment of the roads light flow, introducing Discrete TAI (Traffic Adaptive Installation) and Continuous FAI (Full Adaptive Installation) adjustment, depending on the type of sensors used: to measure only the vehicular flow or even luminance level and weather conditions.
DIADEME chose the second type and probably this attracted a considerable interest from students and teachers in relation to the effectiveness of a regulation based on sensors and cameras able to guarantee safety of people and vehicles. In addition to the significant percentage of reduction of energy consumption and gas emissions that the system can provide.
Some students from the University of Genoa, inspired by DADEME Seminar, have committed themselves to plan a feasibility study of the application of DIADEME System, developed in the Rome EUR area, to the Genoa Historical Centre.

IOThings. Milan 3/4 April 2019

On April 3 and 4, “IOThings” was held in Milan, the most important Italian event in the field of Internet of Things technologies, a possible evolution of Internet network to increase the intelligent use of data communication. Eng. Paolo di Lecce, Managing Director of Reverberi Enetec and head of the Life DIADEME project, took part in the Round Table “IoT Technologies for Energy Efficiency in Public and Private Lighting“.

Becoming “Smart” is the ambition of many cities aiming to develop innovations to improve the quality of life of their citizens. Smart lighting not only enables cities to become more energy efficient, more sensitive and adaptable to citizens needs, but can also promote sustainability because urban spaces become safer and more comfortable. With the support of Universities and Research Centres such as ENEA, the discussion addressed the topic by touching on the key points of the question:

·         How cities provide additional services and infrastructures through smart lighting systems to improve quality of life.

  • Analysis of the applicable management models for the acquisition and control of strategic data supplied by the lighting infrastructures.
  • IoT lighting solutions for cities, business buildings and industrial areas.

Eng. Di Lecce presented the solution provided by the Life-DIADEME project, which is being completed in the Rome EUR district, one of the very first cases in Italy and Europe of Public Adaptive Lighting at the service of Smart City

Small Demonstration Site: First Adaptive Lighting Test

112 luminaires, at end of March 2018, were equipped with Diademe technology for smart lighting in ROMA, EUR district. These devices are collecting data about luminance, traffic flow, air quality, noise level, temperature, pressure and pole inclination, providing adaptive lighting to the streets involved in the project.

A 15 days Testing, along Via dell’Aeronautica, was performed to evaluate how adaptive lighting system performs in urban environment and particularly to demonstrate that adaptive system is able to regulate lighting level on the base of real time traffic detection and luminance level.

Adaptive lighting data were compared with two different conditions: full light and pre-programmed cycle regulation. Full light is the standard regulation for ROMA EUR lighting fixture. Furthermore, street lights were regulated measuring real time luminance and traffic flow, providing however correct luminance level as prescribed by UNI 11248.

The conclusion of the Test was very encouraging. Energy saving through the Adaptive Lighting System, if compared with pre-regulated cycle, was higher than project target: 53% instead of 30%, while the performance was 66% if compared with full light driving, the current standard for ROMA EUR lighting plants.

In January 2019 other about 900 lighting points will be equipped with the Diademe System, as foreseen by the project targets.

Intelligent light piles arrive in Rome. Starting point for experimentation with the new EUR lighting regulation system

Energy saving and sustainability thanks to the installation of 1,000 sensors

Rome, 24 May 2018 – Start in Rome, in the EUR quarter, the first experimentation of a new system dedicated to the regulation of lighting, by the installation of 1,000 sensors of light poles, with which it will be possible to monitor traffic, levels of luminance, noise and air pollution. The project called DIADEME and financed with funds from the LIFE program of the European Union, was born from the collaboration between Reverberi Enetec, a company from the province of Reggio Emilia that deals with the technical part of the project, AGIRE (EU Energy  Agency of Mantua ), ACEA and the Rome Capital Department of Infrastructures.

Every single light point will be equipped with special sophisticated sensors able to monitor the traffic conditions and the luminance on the road, thus producing a significant energy saving and an improvement in traffic safety at the same time .

The information will then be routed to a central unit whose algorithms will evaluate the detected conditions. From these analyzes the levels of light intensity that must be supplied by the individual lighting points will be obtained, in order to comply with the requirements of the UNI11248 standard, pursuing a widespread, intelligent and real-time regulation. Correct lighting will therefore be guaranteed for each monitored area, depending on the data collected.

The project of installation and recovery and analysis of data will be completed by the end of 2019. The installed devices will remain, at the end of the project, available to Roma Capitale without any charge for the Administration that can continue to use the data. If the analysis of the measured values will produce positive results, the project will be widespread and replicable in other areas of Rome.

A further objective of the LIFE-DIADEME project is the acquisition of environmental monitoring data through low-cost sensors; for this reason, every 20 points of light, will be installed of the control units, dedicated to the detection of climate-altering gases. These units, developed by a research center funded by the European Union, will be used for the first time in large numbers in Rome. They will retrieve information on the concentration in the air of ozone (O3), nitrogen monoxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and carbon monoxide (CO). This data should allow a precise and low-cost mapping of the air quality level along the pilot site routes.

The project is divided into two operational phases which provide for the gradual installation of the devices. The technicians of ARETI, an ACEA Group company that deals with public lighting in Rome, deals with the technical aspects relating to the conformation and sizing of the equipment as well as the installation of the same on the supports. To date, the first 109 lighting points have already been installed, while starting from October 2018, the phase will begin on the installation of the remaining 891 lighting points, LARGE TEST SITE. In total, the following will be installed: 1000 electronic traffic, light and noise detection, 50 electronic detection of O3, NO2, NO, CO, 30 electronic sensors for precision detection of road luminance, vehicular traffic and weather conditions.

The Rome Mayor Virginia Raggi said that Rome is looking to the future adding that the Administration is happy that this project can start in the Capital. The first town was confident in further and profitable developments for the city.

The Assessor for Infrastructures Margherita Gatta, participating in an inspection of EUR said that it is a new system that intends to promote a controlled use of resources and could constitute an added value in the activities of energy efficiency that the capital is carrying out on more fronts. Adding that it was a pleasure to meet the winners of the European project and watch these first installed sensors live, which will be followed by others and that this is an important step for the capital to experiment new opportunities and renew its infrastructure system.
